1,496 tons of Colombian Hass avocado will accompany the popular sports celebration in the United States.

  • The Origen Colombia fruit is consolidating its position in the U.S. market and is challenging Mexico, its main supplier, to gain a larger share.
  • Hass avocado is grown mainly in seven departments of the country: Antioquia, Risaralda, Quindío, Caldas, Valle del Cauca, Huila and Tolima. The sector ranks fourth in agro-exports.

We are consolidating in the United States

On Sunday, February 11, the 58th edition of the Super Bowl will be held in Las Vegas, United States. The popular final of the professional soccer league of the North American country is a great opportunity to promote the Hass Avocado Origin Colombia, since this fruit is the protagonist of the celebration.

The United States is the most important market for Hass avocado. Mexico is its main supplier, but the Colombian fruit is gaining more and more space to delight consumers with its unique flavor and quality. This year approximately 1,496 tons will be shipped to accompany the sports festival, which represents a total growth of 56% of exports during this time, compared to figures for 2023.

“The Hass Origin Colombia, as we differentiate our avocado, stands out in more than 30 countries where it arrives, not only because of its flavor, but also because it makes its way as a benchmark of sustainability for the world, from its three dimensions. Its positive impact translates into welfare and quality of life for those who are part of its value chain, economic growth and responsible use of resources”, said Katheryn Mejía Vergel, Executive Director of Corpohass (Corporation of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Colombia).

Hass avocado is the third most exported fruit by the country, after banana and plantain. At least 70 containers with this variety will be sent to the United States between January 22 and February 18, so that local traders can take its delicious flavor to consumers in different states.

Hass is a fundamental part of the sporting event, both before, during and after the celebration, since it is customary to consume it in different preparations that accompany the snacks and meals shared by American soccer fans. For this reason, Colombian fruit has enormous opportunities to conquer the U.S. market. Not only is it an alternative to satisfy the high demand, but its origin represents a constant responsibility with the environment and the community.

Colombian agribusiness closed 2023 with record exports, achieving a 26.3% increase in containers shipped to different markets around the world. In order for this growth to continue in 2024, the sector is joining forces to work as a team to position Hass Origin Colombia as a benchmark of sustainability.

“Events like the Super Bowl allow us to make known the reality of our sector, what is behind each fruit, so that it is clear how it contributes to the sustainable development of the country”, concluded Mejía Vergel.

Corpohass projects that Colombian exports of Hass avocado will grow close to 20% in 2024, which is equivalent to at least 147,244 tons of the fruit. This implies a continuous effort to formalize rural labor, gender equity, knowledge transfer, and social welfare.
